I am probably going to use my organ donor status then.

Its a Hyosung GT250R, a buddy gave it to me as he is done messing with it, and i cant say no to free. Looks like the fuel cock is bad and needs to be rebuilt. Ordering the parts tonight, then flush the crank case (was FILLED with gas) with oil and do an oil change. I'll probably also get my motorcycle license too, oh and a helmet, evidently those are useful as well.

I do have the fairings as well, they are just cracked (he laid it down once) and I haven't decided whether I will leave them off or not. Its a 2009, caurberated, and the tires are pretty much new. Its my first bike, second caurberated vehicle, and hopefully will be a fun little commuter. Any tips? Anybody own a similar bike? I probably need some advice on the fuel cock and maintenance in general. Halp?

A 250 is a good bike to start on. Check your tires regularly, oil, lube/adjust the chain, make sure your brakes are good, basic stuff like that goes a long way.

Just get comfortable on it, take a MSF class to get properly endorsed/legal and think that everyone else is out to get ya' (b/c then you'll always be ready to dodge the asshat who comes into your lane w/o looking).

It really is, I say he gave it to me, but really I just convinced him that it would be better to give to me than take to the dump, as he was going to do that. He had no idea what's wrong with it, so I think I found out what was wrong and I let him know before he signed over the title that it could be a $50 fix, and I would give it back to him working for what I had into it, plus reimbursement for my time invested. He said keep it and signed the title.

I'm military so I have to take a set of safety courses (so they can say "We gave you training, too bad" when I do something dumb). Once I've got the training done, I get the bike legal in my name, fax everything to the DMV, get plates, registration, insurance, etc... Get my motorcycle endorsement and riding gear, and I'll be good to go. Tires look new, chicken stripes are still there, Chain needs attention for sure, as its got some surface rust, I'm fairly sure YouTube will be my savior there. It's not drivable yet, but the rotors look good, not sure about the pads or calipers. It's so easy to work on though, I had the thing stripped down in less than an hour.

I am taking suggestions for the plate, I'm thinking a vanity plate might be in order.

I know exactly what you're talking about; regardless of riding experience and endorsements they still need to say "they gave you training". Hassle... but worth it to be able to ride! Good luck.

Nice! I just started riding myself. Took the MSF/Safety Council course last year and finally bought a bike a few weeks ago ('01 Suzuki GSX-600F).

I can't recommend the safety course enough. Not sure what the military training you mentioned was like, is it similar to the 16 hours the MSF/Safety Council does?

No kidding. Being on the DC/Baltimore area, I will be on guard to say the least, I'm practically paranoid in my MR2, being such a small car, but a bike? I'm probably going to get it on the highway once and then vow to never do that again. Thankfully I can take a city/back road route to work. I see that being where the bike gets used most.

Couldnt say yet as I haven't taken it, it should be at the end of the month if I can get the bike running and registered by then.
